For under 40K, it is hard to find a better boat than 190 FSH. It has a large fuel tank, 8 seating capacity, and lots of user-friendly features.
However, there are some common problems with Yamaha 190 FSH Sport that you should know.
Also, I have included the possible solutions to those issues for your convenience. Let’s get started.
|Water leaking through the anchor locker water exiting plug||Design flaw creating a gap between the plug and anchor locker|
|Fiberglass coat coming off after a year or so||Vibration and closing impact taking the coats off from contact areas|
|Getting low voltage warning without any visible issue||Can be the wiring, loose connection, or battery|
1. Leak Issue
The most common problem faced by all 190 FSH owners is water leakage.
You can go through several forums, and there are tons of threads and discussions about this topic.
However, it is not a major problem, and you can fix it yourself. But first, check out the possible reason for the issue.
Let’s understand why water goes into the storage area in the first place.
There are some situations but you experience it especially after cleaning the locker.
After looking at the tubes for exiting the water, you will see some engineering flaws. There is a gap.
So, when the water pressure is low, some water gets into the boat and reaches the storage area.
Also, when the sea is rough and hitting the exiting hole, some water goes into it.
The only solution is to fill the gap. You can do it by using clear silicone. Make sure that the silicone is a general-purpose adhesive with application compatibility for both interior and exterior.
- First of all, remove the opening plug outside the boat.
- One can use a scraper blade or screwdriver to remove the plug without damaging it or the O-ring.
- Put some silicone on the outer portion of the hole.
- After that, put back the plug, and let it dry for a whole night.
- Finally, pour some water into the anchor locker and check whether the leak is sealed properly.
Still, some of you might small traces of water coming into the storage area. In that case, one can build a small wooden platform to cover the small dugout.
2. Fiberglass Wear Problem
There are lots of compartments in Yamaha 190 FSH Sport. After running the boat for a year or more, you will notice wears on some spots.
It is not everywhere on the boat. Look closely to where the lids close. The contact points are the main spots of this problem.
Furthermore, a few customers complained that their boat’s gel coat had air pockets.
As the problem was reported within the warranty period, Yamaha bore the cost of the repair. Even if you see any hairline cracks, you can inform your dealer or Yamaha.
I don’t know who to blame for this problem. It can be a design fault. The hatches go all the way and constant vibration and impact create the wear.
As there is no protective coating, it is bound to happen. However, the problem doesn’t occur in a short time.
Using the boat for years can leave some of those marks. Here, I have given a simple solution that every boat owner can try without spending much.
For fixing the issue, you will have to recoat those specific spots. Let me describe the steps.
First of all, gather some supplies. The list is as follows.
- Rubbing alcohol
- Scrapper blade
- White Marine Tex
- Clean cloth
- Begin by cleaning the affected area. Use rubbing alcohol with the cloth or cleaning towel.
- After that, tape around the affected area so that other parts don’t get the new coating. Only keep the wear spots exposed.
- Next, put on the gloves, and mix Marine-Tex following the instructions on the package.
- Then, use the scraper blade to apply the paint or coat over the marked spots.
- Finally, let it cure, and take off the tapes once it is done.
Having some gel coat on the fiberglass is going to protect it from harsh conditions.
Tip: You may see that the coat is sticking out a little bit which is okay. Because with time, it will wear out. Furthermore, leave the coating cure for 8 to 10 hours.
Those who are not liking the paint coats sticking out can use fine sandpapers to level those areas.
Also, make sure that the contact points of the closing lid get some sanding so that vibration can’t do much damage to the painting again.
3. Low Voltage Issue
I have found a user complaining about the batteries not charging even after leaving them connected for charging for the whole night.
Another complaint was that cruising at low speed, the low-voltage alarm suddenly went off. The system and aux. were showing 10.5V which dropped down to around 8.8 within 10 miles.
At the same time, lots of other features stopped working.
It can be the issues of connections, battery terminals, or simply the batteries themselves.
If everything is fine, you must check the ground connection. Because loose ground can affect all things without any warning at the same time.
The first thing you have to do is to check the connections. Because loose connections are one of the most common fixes in these situations.
After that, take a voltmeter to measure the battery voltage. However, people may not detect the problem in some situations.
Because you can’t tell if the battery is incapable of holding charge without special equipment.
So, take it to a nearby shop or your dealer, and have them checked.

Despite some minor issues, 190 FSH is a great boat with lots of features and power.
Whether you are planning to run the boat on sweat or saltwater, you won’t find any problem.
Those are the words from first-hand owners. It is common to experience some minor issues. But you will be covered by the warranty.
In the long run, it is the most practical and durable boat for the northwest. It has lots of space to sit and consumes less fuel than the competitor models.
However, having debris in the water can reduce the speed.
One user mentioned that he found a few strands of grass and other plants on the intake grate which caused about a 10% reduction in the thrust.
I recommend you to focus on the first problem I have mentioned because the design flaw is present in all units.
So, taking care of it will give you a huge advantage, and nothing in your storage area will get wet.
Also, there are some other minor problems with the 190 FSH fishing boat. They won’t give you much trouble. In summary, this is a well-designed and stylish fishing vessel that everyone must consider.
